Comedian Will Ferrell put it best when he said his favorite team
was the Los Angeles Angels of the Anaheim of the Southern Part
of California of the Western part of the United States....
Rivalries in LA have always been less than exciting then in other
parts of the United States. The likely result is one teams
dominance over the other. A look at the NBA and you find that
'Showtime' is the Lakers and 'Matinee' would better describe the
Clippers.
The Angels may have won the world series a few years back but
do not hold the love of the area like the Dodger blue.
Therefore it seems only appropriate that an LA rivalry would be
built out of a lawsuit. It is not about history, who's players are
better but rather about who has the rights to the city for
marketing purposes. It is so LA.
The Angels started the mess by changing their affiliation before
the season got under way. And the Dodgers escalated it by
being the only team in MLB to refuse to call the Angels by their
new name on the scoreboard. In 31 cities you will see the Angels
refered to as LAA, yet at Chavez Ravine they remain so 2004 with
the moniker of AA.
The answer, and what better way is there in sports, is to decide
it on the diamond. Winner gets LA and the loser goes to
Anaheim. Can't you see it now, the Anaheim Dodgers...
