The Rivalry:  Bonds v. Kent
By:  Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer

As the old story goes Jackie Robinson chose retirement over
wearing the orange and black.  Robinson understood the rivalry
and walked away from baseball as a Dodger instead of taking the
money to join the hated Giants.

Well we are in a new era now and money has supplanted team
loyalty for most players.  It is not to criticize the taking of the
money, but rather where one takes the money from.  There
would not be a more painful sight than Will Clark draped in
Dodger Blue.  Luckily for Giants' fan that is no more than a
horrible nightmare.  The Dodgers' fan have not been as lucky as
they had to watch the immortal Orel Hershiser put on the Orange
and Black.

Jeff Kent was never the most popular Giant and would not even
make a top ten list of most popular Giants over the past 20
years.  However, Jeff Kent was a great Giant during his six
seasons in San Francisco.  Kent drove in over 100 runs every
year he suited up for the Giants and even won the MVP in 2000.
In 2002 Kent helped the Giants reach the seventh game of the
World Series.

Kent left the Giants after 2002 season and spent the past two
years in Houston with the Astros.  Then this past off-season Kent
made the anti-Robinson choice and took the money from Los
Angeles to suit up in Dodger Blue for the 2005 and 2006 season.

Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent were the best one-two punch in the
league for the six seasons they spent together.  While they will
be most remembered for their dugout brawl caught on National
Television, they should be remembered for the great numbers
they put up and the victories they had.

While in the same uniform the Giants averaged over 91 wins per
season and made the post season four times (this includes the
one game playoff against the Cubs in 2001).  In 2002, Bonds and
Kent led the Giants to within five outs of a World Series
Championship.  And since the new millenium broke, no one other
than Bonds or Kent has won an MVP in the National League.

Historically, the Dodgers and Giants rivalry has existed on two
coast and has been more intense than any other rivalry in
baseball.  In their histories the Giants have been to 17 World
Series and won five, while the Dodgers have been to 18 Series
and won six.  These two teams have put up comparable stats
through the years and have often battled to the last days of the
season for division supremacy.

Over the past four years the either the Giants or Dodgers have
fought each other hard down the stretch for a playoff spot.  In
2001 the Giants finished four games in front of the Dodgers to
clinch a one-game playoff with the Chicago Cubs.  In 2002 the
Giant again finished 4 games in front of the Dodgers to clinch a
wildcard.  In 2003 the Giants finished first and the Dodgers
second.  And in 2004 the Dodgers beat the Giants on the second
to last day of the season to secure the Western Division by two
games over their northern rivals.

Now with Jeff Kent and Barry Bonds in opposite dugouts the
rivalry is sure to grow ever deeper.
