The Rivalry:  Red Sox v. Yankees

There is no other rivalry in sports that compares with that of the
Red Sox and Yankees.  The hatred between these two great
franchises started after the 1919 season.  The Boston Red Sox
sold the rights to Babe Ruth to the Yankees.  At that time the
Red Sox had won five championships in 15 years.

Little did Red Sox owner Harry Frazee realize that this one move
would change the history of two of sports greatest teams.  The
Yankees went on to win 26 championships after buying the
Babe.  And the Red Sox waited 86 years until the 2004 season
before finally winning again.  This 86 year period simply became
known as the 'Curse of the Babe.'

Highlights of the curse in recent years have focused on two
moments.  First was Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series
against the New York Mets.  A slow bouncing ground ball to first
that would have earned the Sox their first championship in 68
years split Buckner's wickets.  The Mets rallied, won the game,
forced a game seven and won the series.

And second in 2003, the Sox held a late lead against the
Yankees in game seven of the American League Championship
Series.  The Yankees tied the game to force extra innings.  And
in bottom of the eleventh unlikely hero Aaron Boone ended the
contest and sent the Yankees to another World Series and the
suffering of the Sox continued.

Finally in 2004 the Sox overcame the hated Yankees.  Down
three games to none the Sox rallied in the bottom of the ninth
of game four against the best post season closer ever, Mariano
Rivera, to send the game to extra innings.  And after over five
hours the Sox lived to play another game.  Three games later
and the Sox became the first baseball team to win a series after
being down three games to none.

The Sox went on to sweep the Cardinals in the World Series
and first time in 86 years, the Yankees were looking up at the
Sox.  The Yankees - Red Sox rivalry is sure to continue this year.
