The Rivalry: Schilling v. Johnson
By:  Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer

Eight days apart in the late summer of 1988, two rookie pitchers
took to the mound for what would be their first career starts in
two historic careers.

Randy Johnson started his career with the Montreal Expos.
After two seasons with the Expos Johnson moved on to the
Seattle Mariners where he won the Cy Young in 1995.  In 1998,
Johnson was traded to the Houston Astros and following the
1998 season, Johnson signed a multi-year contract with the
Arizona Diamondbacks.  While with the Diamondbacks, Johnson
won the Cy Young four straight seasons from 1999 through
2002.  Johnson has a career record of 246-128.

Curt Schilling started his historic run with Baltimore Orioles
where he pitched is first three seasons.  After one year with the
Houston Astros, Schilling signed on with the Philadelphia Phillies
where he became a bona fide star.  Schilling pitched for the
Phillies from 1992 until the trading deadline of the 2000 season,
leading the Phillies to the World Series in 1993.  Halfway
through the 2000 season Schilling was traded to the Arizona
Diamondbacks.  Schilling pitched for the Diamondbacks through
the 2003 season and was traded to the Boston Red Sox before
the start of the 2004 season.  Schilling led the Sox to their first
World Series victory in 86 years.  Schilling has a career record of
184-123.

But is was on July 26 of 2000 that these two great pitchers
were became united.  Schilling's trade from the Phillies gave the
Diamondbacks the best 1-2 starters in Major League Baseball.
In the three full seasons Schilling and Johnson pitched together
in the desert, they combined for 104 victories and only 41 losses.

The clear highlight of their time together in the desert was the
2001 season as this great pitching duo led the Diamondbacks to
the Worlds Series.  The Diamondbacks went on to defeat the
New York Yankees in seven games.  In the seventh game,
Schilling started and Johnson came into relieve.  Combined their
pitching talents held the Yankees to just two runs.   Schilling
and Johnson were named World Series Co-MVPs.

This 1-2 punch capped off the perfect season by finishing, of
course, 1-2 in the National League Cy Young voting.

When Schilling left his pitching mate behind after the 2003
season, the three and half year run of baseball's greatest 1-2
punch seemed destined for the history books.  Little did we
know that the New York Yankees would sweep in and acquire
Johnson from the Diamondbacks in a huge trade.

Now the former 1-2 punch of the Diamondbacks will face off as
the number one pitchers on the top two teams in the American
League Eastern Division.  Already slated to face each other on
opening day, the Schilling - Johnson rivalry is sure to be top
notch in the 2005 season.
