| The Rivalry: Hudson v. Mulder By: Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer The Oakland A’s produced one the best teams in all of baseball during the past five seasons making the playoffs four times. More amazingly, the A’s fielded a team ranked near the bottom of the league in salary, spending less than a third of what the New York Yankees spent. During this period two MVPs left the A’s for the cash of a major market. Jason Giambi signed with the Yankees for $120 million and Miguel Tejada signed with the Baltimore Orioles for $72 million. The combination of losing players and low salary has not affected the A’s winning ways. The reason is simple. Three pitchers, better known as the big three, were the constant for the A’s over the past five seasons. Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito made up the big three. Hudson joined the A’s in 1999 and Mulder and Zito in 2000. Combined, the big three won 245 games and lost only 121. Then within two days of one another the A’s traded two-thirds of the big three. Hudson was sent to the Atlanta Braves and Mulder was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. And for the first time in their careers Mulder and Hudson will not play together in A’s green, but rather suit up for reigning National League Central and National League East champions as rivals. The Braves have won the National League East thirteen straight seasons while the Cardinals have made the playoffs four of the last five seasons. Twice since 1996 the Braves and Cardinals have met in the postseason. With the addition of Mulder and Hudson both teams are favored to win their respective divisions again this season. And unlike in Oakland where Mulder and Hudson teamed up to lead the A’s, in 2005 and beyond Hudson and Mulder will battle each other in what is sure to be a great new rivalry. |
