The Rivalry:  Pedro v. Yankees
By: Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer

In 1998, Pedro Martinez left the comfy confines of Canadian
Baseball and the Montreal Expos to join the Boston Red Sox and
one of the greatest rivalries in sports.  For seven seasons Pedro
Martinez was the face of the Boston Red Sox.  And for seven
seasons Pedro battled the New York Yankees for supremacy in
the American League East.

The duels between Pedro and the Yankees became legendary
for multiple reasons.  The Red Sox and Yankees faced each
other three times in the postseason during Pedro’s tenure.

In 1999, the Yankees beat the Sox in the American League
Championship Series four games to one.  However, the one win
by the Red Sox was due to an absolute pitching gem by Pedro.
Pedro pitched seven innings, gave up no runs, only two hits and
struck out twelve.

Pedro would have to wait until the 2003 season to again meet
the hated Yankees in the playoffs.  The Sox fell short again as
Aaron Boone hit an extra inning homerun in game seven to take
the Yankees past the Sox and into the World Series.  However,
it was not Pedro’s pitching that would be remembered from the
2003 ALCS.  While Pedro pitched seven strong innings in game
seven only to be left in too long by manager Grady Little, it was
Pedro’s confrontation with Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer
that will be recalled.

Tensions were running high in game three.  A fight had already
occurred in the bullpen between a Red Sox groundskeeper and
several Yankees’ pitchers.  Then in the third inning, Pedro
intentionally threw at a Yankees batter.  73-year-old Zimmer led
the charge in the bench-clearing brawl.  Zimmer headed directly
for Pedro.  And the 32-year-old Pedro Martinez leveled old man
Zimmer to the ground.

In 2004, Pedro finally exacted his revenge.  Pedro entered the
ALCS after having called the Yankees his “daddy” during the
regular season.  As Pedro took the mound in New York during
the ALCS, 50,000 fans screamed in unison, “Who’s your
daddy?”  The Red Sox quickly fell to a 3-0 hole and were just
three outs from calling it a season and bowing to the Yankees
once again.

Four games later and the greatest comeback in professional
sports, it appears that Pedro was ribbing the Yankees who
clearly were no longer his “daddy.”  The Red Sox won four
straight, went to the World Series and ended a curse that had
hung over the team for 86 years.

Following the 2004 season, Pedro Martinez ended his seven-
year run with the Red Sox and signed a four-year contract worth
more than $50 million with the New York Mets.  After battling the
Yankees for seven seasons in the American League East, Pedro
will now take on the Yankees for the title of New York’s favorite
baseball team.

The two baseball teams of New York wage a daily war for the
back page cover of the New York Daily News.  And it is Pedro
who will lead the Mets charge.
