| The Rivalry: Clemens v. Beltran By: Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer The Houston Astros won their first ever playoff series in 2004 coming within one game of a World Series birth. The Astros ride to the edge of the World Series rode directly on the shoulders of their two best players. Cy Young award winning Roger Clemens and five-tool outfielder Carlos Beltran. Though taking rather different paths the two became teammates halfway through the 2004 campaign. Clemens had retired at the completion of the 2003 season only to come out of retirement several months later to join his good pal Andy Pettitte and his hometown team the Astros. Clemens, a six-time Cy Young winner gave a hometown discount as well playing for just $5 million. Clemens finished 18-4 and won his seventh Cy Young. Beltran had spent his entire career with the small market Kansas City Royals. In the three seasons preceding 2004, Beltran averaged 26 homeruns, 102 runs batted in, 107 runs scored and 36 stolen bases per season. Then 69 games into 2004, Beltran was traded from the Royals to the Astros. Beltran had his best season yet as he hit 38 homeruns, drove in 104 runs, scored 121 runs and stole 42 bases. On June 24, 2004, Beltran was traded and joined Clemens and his 38-34 Astros. Together Beltran and Clemens led the Astros to a 54-36 record. The Astros won the Wild Card and faced the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series playoffs. The Astros had never won a playoff series and boasted a 0-7 playoff series record. Behind the strength of Clemens and Beltran the Astros beat the Braves in five games. Clemens won game one and left game four with a 5-2 lead, while Beltran hit four homeruns during the series. The Astros faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series where they were dispatched in seven games. Beltran did all he could as he tied Barry Bonds' playoff records by slugging four more homeruns to bring his playoff total to eight. Clemens went 1-1 in the NCLS. Following the 2004 season even though they parted Beltran and Clemens stayed linked. Together they signed the largest single season contract and largest multiple season contract of the off-season. Beltran signed with Mets for seven years and $117 million, while Clemens avoided arbitration and agreed to $18 million for one year with the Astros. While these two superstars will not play together again, sans the all star game, they created a very memorable run for the Astros. And baseball will watch as Clemens and his Astros face Beltran and the Mets ten times during the 2005 season. |
