The Rivalry:  Dodgers v. Giants
The Dodgers and Giants rivalry has existed on two coast and has
been more intense than any other rivalry in baseball.  In their
histories the Giants have been to 17 World Series and won five,
while the Dodgers have been to 18 Series and won six.  These
two teams have put up comparable stats through the years and
have often battled to the last days of the season for division
supremacy.

Since 1951 the Giants and Dodgers have finished first and second
in their division with two or less games separating their records
nine times.  Players involved in this great rivalry include Willie
Mays, Barry Bonds, Willie McCovey, Jackie Robinson, Mike Piazza,
Duke Snider, Juan Marichal, Orel Hershiser, Will Clark, and Sandy
Kofax.

But the moment that lives brightest in rival history is baseball's
most memorable hit, better known as 'The Shot Heard Round The
World.'

In 1951 the Giants found themselves 13 games behind the
Dodgers with just 45 games to play.  The Giants rallied late and
tied the Dodgers atop the division on the last day of the season.
According to old rules a tie was broken by a three game playoff.
The Dodgers and Giants split the first two.  In game three the
Dodgers held a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.  The
Giants scored a run and had two on base when Bobby Thomson
entered the batter's box.  Thomson turned on Ralph Branca's
second pitch and deposited it deep into the left field stands.  As
Thomson ran the bases the PA announcer screamed at the top of
lungs, "The Giants Win the Pennant, The Giants Win the
Pennant..."

The rivalry has continued through the years and last season the
Dodgers had the last laugh as they won the second to last game
of the season to clinch the division and knock the Giants out of
the playoffs.  Entering 2005 the rivalry will be even more intense
as former Giant Jeff Kent signed with the Dodgers.

And to think that 50 years ago Jackie Robinson retired instead of
signing with the Giants.
