The Rivalry:  Giants v. A's
By: Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer
While the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s do not share a
city, the Bay Bridge span is all that separates them.  From either
stadium you can see the cross-bay rival.  These two teams
share the bay that is about all they share.  The differences
range from their stadiums, to their philosophies, and to their
cities mayor.

The Giants play in a state of the art stadium with views of the
bay and the city skyline.  While the A’s lone view is that of
Mount Davis, an atrocity attached to the top of the Coliseum by
Oakland Raiders’ owner Al Davis.  The Giants’ park does not
have a bad seat and big homeruns often end with a splash.  Yet
the A’s must deal with spike marks, ripped turf and historic
facilities.

Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown does not believe in the positive
effects of sports on a city and therefore will not support a new
stadium for the A’s.  Several Oakland politicians including
Oakland City Attorney John Russo have criticized Brown’s
ridiculous beliefs that cost the city of Oakland the Super Bowl in
2005.

Meanwhile San Francisco has celebrated that revival of the
China Basin area that is the current home of the Giants.  Former
Mayor Willie Brown supported the stadium and San Francisco
has benefited greatly from the beautiful park.

Outside of politics and their respective cities, both organizations
are run on opposite agendas.  Lead by two of the best general
managers in all of sports, Billy Beane of the A’s and Brian
Sabean of the Giants.

Beane has been held to rather strict budget and has therefore
developed one of the best farm systems in baseball.  Year after
year the A’s lose quality players only to replace them with stars
in waiting.  Even as the A’s lost MVP players Miguel Tejada and
Jason Giambi in back to back seasons, they continued to win.  In
fact the A’s have been one of the most competitive teams in
baseball over the past five seasons.

This season the A’s traded away two of their big three pitchers
in a cost saving youth movement.  The A’s shipped Tim Hudson
to the Braves and Mark Mulder to the Cardinals.  Most baseball
people shiver at the notion of trading two aces, yet Beane's
moves have been successful time and time again.

As the A’s have gone younger and younger, the Giants continue
to age.  Led by baseball’s best player 40 year old Barry Bonds,
there is not a starter on the Giants less than 31.  And the
average age of the outfield is 39.  Yet every year GM Sabean
finds veterans to come to San Francisco to win.  This year the
Giants have added gold glove shortstop Omar Vizquel and gold
glove catcher Mike Matheny.

However the Giants biggest move was the signing of closer
Armando Benitez.  The Giants battled to the last day of the 2004
season only to fall short of the Dodgers in the West and the
Astros in the wildcard.  The Giants missed the postseason for
the first time in several years because of the lack of a true
closer.  Giants’ closer were successful in 47 of 76 save
opportunities, where Benitez was successful in 47 or 49 save
chances last year.

While the A’s and Giants operate under completely opposite
philosophies, both work.  The A’s and Giants have been two of
the most successful teams in baseball over the past five years
and 2005 should bring us more of the same.
