The Rivalry: Red Sox v. Cardinals
By: Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer

In a rematch of last years World Series, the Boston Red Sox will
travel to St. Louis to battle the Cardinals.   The Red Sox defeated
the Cardinals and the Curse to erase 86 years of futility.

Both teams enter this series significantly different than the teams
that met in the 2004 World Series just months earlier.

The Red Sox parted ways with their most identifiable player
Pedro Martinez.  Martinez, a fixture in Boston for seven seasons,
left for the New York Mets and their four-year $52 million
contract.  Also fleeing from the Sox were Derek Lowe and Orlando
Cabrera.  Lowe had an average regular season only to become
the first pitcher in postseason history to win three deciding
games in one post season.  Lowe signed a multiyear contract
with the Dodgers.  Cabrera, who joined the Sox midseason,
signed a four-year deal with the Angels.

In their place, the Red Sox signed pitchers Matt Clement, formerly
of the Chicago Cubs, and David Wells, a long-time New York
Yankee that pitched for the San Diego Padres last season.
Replacing Cabrera at shortstop is Edgar Renteria.  Renteria, an
all-star with the Cardinals for several years, was one of the off-
seasons biggest signings.

For the Red Sox, the most important signing of the off-season
was that of Jason Varitek.  Varitek has been the heart and soul of
the Red Sox for several years.

The Cardinals have reshaped as well.  Along with losing
shortstop Renteria, the Cardinal lost all-star and gold glove
catcher Mike Matheny to the San Francisco Giants.  The Cardinals
have replaced them with former Angel David Eckstein and backup
Yadier Molina, respectively.

Yet the biggest move the Cardinals’ off-season was the trade
that brought in number one pitcher Mark Mulder.  Mulder’s
addition to the Cardinals lone weakness should give a huge
boost to a team that won 105 regular season games in 2004.

Even with the new rosters, the rematch of the Cardinals and Red
Sox should not be missed.
