The Rivalry: Yankees v. Cardinals
By:  Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer

The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees are two
baseballs most dominant franchises.  Combined they have they
have won 35 of Major League Baseball’s 100 World Series.  Five
times the Cardinals and Yankees have faced off against each
other in the World Series with the Cardinals holding a 3-2 edge.

In an interleague game two seasons ago the Yankees and
Cardinals met for what would be a historic night.  Roger Clemens
beat the Cardinals and thus earned is 300th career victory and
struck out his 4000s batter.

While these two dynasties have not met in the fall classic since
1964, they have appeared in seven of the last nine World Series.
Entering the 2005 Major League Baseball season, most experts
will pick these two powerhouses to face off in the 2005 World
Series.  Both teams have improved greatly from 2004.

In 2004 both teams had their World Series Championship dreams
dashed by the Boston Red Sox.  The Yankees had the best record
in the American League but squandered a three games to none
lead to the Red Sox in the American League Championship series
and fell victim in seven.  The Cardinals had the best record in
baseball but they eventually lost to the Champion Red Sox 4
games to none in the World Series.

Entering 2005, both teams have radically improved their great
rosters from last season by adding quality starting pitchers.

The Cardinals traded for former Oakland A’s ace Mark Mulder
while the Yankees acquired Randy Johnson from the Arizona
Diamondbacks.  Both moves immediately strengthen both
rotations by adding a number one starter.  The trickle down effect
these moves will have the rest of the rotation clearly gives both
teams a leg up on their division rivals.

This will be a great baseball match up and a possible preview of
the 2005 World Series.
