Understanding the Media Bias
By:  Keith Dobkowski, MLB News Writer
December 4, 2004

Major media failed us last night in an obvious effort to get ratings
and earn commercial dollars.  ABC’s television news magazine
20/20 aired last night with an interview of Victor Conte, owner of
BALCO.  Martin Bashir, famous for interviewing Michael Jackson
and Princess Diana, looked the fool as he tried to talk baseball.
Bashir, who obviously does not know a thing about baseball,
continually mispronounced players’ names and at one point was
referring to Jason Giambi as “Gumby.”

While most of America will take Bashir’s interview as truth, the
baseball fan knows better.  Bashir showed pictures of Barry
Bonds yet never gave dates to correspond with the pictures.
Bashir insinuated that the pictures were much closer in date than
they were.  In fact, the pictures Bashir showed of Bonds were
taken 18 years apart.  The first picture of Bonds was taken when
he was 21 and on the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The next picture of
Bonds was taken when he was 39 and on the San Francisco
Giants.

The weight gain that Bashir tried to show as proof of steroid use
is nothing more than irresponsible reporting.  Bashir left out facts
such as Bonds’ weight has only increased 13.5% in 19 years.
Almost the exact same amount Michael Jordan increased over the
same period.  Bashir never stated that Bonds has never had a
huge weight gain during his career, but rather indicated that
Bonds had put on this weight in a relatively short period.

ABC, along with other major networks, are entering a realm they
are not familiar with.  Their entrance is money and rating based,
with truth falling a distant third.

The better, yet unreported story for ABC should have been that
confidential Grand Jury testimony was leaked to the press.  There
have been claims of institutional racism and a government
conspiracy.  However, ABC covered none of these stories and
instead put a non-baseball reporter discussing an out-of-context
story.

ABC should be embarrassed by their attempt at independent
reporting from Friday night’s 20/20.  And Bashir, who has already
been caught once intentionally editing a story out of context,
should be ashamed and relegated to covering celebrity’s
vacations.

Baseball fans are intelligent enough to know where to find the
real information on the BALCO case.  There are news outlets on
the air and in print whose main focus is baseball.  Reporters such
as Peter Gammons report on baseball full-time and understand
the full BALCO story.

ABC’s attempt to enter this arena was wrong.  It was a disservice
to Baseball, a disservice to Baseball’s star players, and a
disservice to ABC watchers.
