NBA Trade Deadline Looms

With the NBA trade deadline just days away, many names will be
shuffled about with very little action expected.  But it is the
possibilities that wet the imagination.  Names on the trading
front include Jason Kidd, Chris Webber, Lamar Odom, Bobby
Jackson, Gary Payton, Carlos Boozer, Baron Davis, Michael Redd,
Peja Stojakavic, Latrell Sprewell and Ray Allen.

Many of the rumors circle around Lamar Odom.  Odom is
incredibly talented, long and has a pass first mentality.
However, Odem requires the ball too much with the Lakers and
that obviously does not mesh well with ball hog Kobe Bryant.
Originally when Shaquille O’neal was dealt to Miami, the Lakers
thought that Odom would be a great compliment to Bryant.  Yet,
Odom, like Kobe, likes the offense to rotate through him.

Rumors have connected Odom to Boozer in Utah, but most likely
have Odom going to the Lakers’ Western Conference rivals, the
Sacramento Kings.  As discussed during the All Star game, the
main rumor sends Odom to Sacramento for Stojakavic and the
injured Bobby Jackson.

Stojakavic has one more season remaining on his contract and
has a very public dispute with Kings’ star Chris Webber.  Further,
Stojakovic’s closest friend, Vlade Divac, signed with the Lakers
last off-season.  Rumors have placed Stojakovic with the Lakers
upon becoming a free agent.  A trade by the Kings would
guarantee return, specifically a former All-Star in Odom.

However, the Kings do not want to part with Stojakovic and
would rather move overpaid and consistently injured Webber.
Webber has three years and over $60 million remaining on his
contract.  Due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement rules
stating that players contract values must be within 15% of each
other, and the Lakers desire to get equal trade value, a trade
between these two rivals would only occur if Brian Grant was put
in the mix.  Therefore a trade of Odom and Grant for Webber and
Jackson would be the blockbuster of the 2004 – 2005 season.

There are plenty of other stars out there and rumored to be on
the move.  While most will stay put, here are the rumors.

Gary Payton wants out of Boston and to be closer to his West
Coast home.  Payton is in the last year of his contract and will
leave the Celtics after the season.  While Danny Ainge would
move Peyton if a first round pick was offered, Celtics’ star Paul
Pierce has gone to the media and declared that Celts need
Peyton to stay.  One possibility would send Peyton to the
Minnesota Timber Wolves for point guard Sam Cassel.  The
salaries match, the positions match and both need a change of
scenery.

Jason Kidd has asked out of New Jersey several times but is
likely to stay till the summer.  New Jersey wants Kidd to play with
Vince Carter and a healthy Richard Jefferson before giving up
faith in the Nets.  The Nets are just a few games out of the
playoffs and trading their best player will quash any playoff
hopes.  However, if New Jersey wants to scrap the season and
rebuild during the summer they could trade Kidd to the Timber
Wolves for Latrell Sprewell.  The salaries match and with
Jefferson hurt, Sprewell would have a starting spot.   Kidd wants
to play with Kevin Garnett and together they could lead the
Timber Wolves to the championship.

Unless a premier player is offered, Ray Allen will not be moved.
Allen is in the last year of his contract and has offered a
hometown discount to the Seattle Supersonics for less than the
six-years and $95 million he could earn.  For six months the
Sonics and Allen have gone back and forth over a new contract
and currently the best offer from the Sonics is three years with a
team option for a fourth.  The holdup is due to the expiring
Collective Bargaining Agreement.  The new CBA may limit
maximum contract lengths and Seattle does not want to pay
more than it may have to.  Furthermore, this is the best season
Seattle has had since the days of Peyton and Shawn Kemp.
Without Allen the Sonics are a lottery team.

Michael Redd has been linked to Lebron James and the
Cleveland Cavaliers.  Redd is a free agent after the season and
is from the Cleveland area.  Redd’s desire to return home and
the Milwaukee Bucks’ insistence on not losing Redd for nothing
may lead to Redd’s trade.  The Cavaliers have offered Drew
Gooden and a first round pick for Redd.  Because the Bucks
season is shot they may take the offer instead of losing Redd in
the off-season.

Others that may be moved by Thursday included Baron Davis,
Donyell Marshall, Jalen Rose, Malik Rose and Nick Van Exel.
While the fan dreams of blockbuster after blockbuster we will
most likely be left with Dale Davis on a new roster.
