BCS Misses Again
By:  Keith Dobkowski, NCAA News Writer
December 7, 2004

The BCS has failed yet again.  After having no undefeated teams
last year, this year the BCS was faced with five.  And only two,
USC and Oklahoma, can play for the national championship.

And while we will have a clear winner in the USC – Oklahoma
game, we may still leave the college football season with four
undefeated teams.  Again we will be deprived of a consensus
national champion.

The BCS is left with three options.  Self-destruct and go back to
the way bowls used to be.  Tweak the BCS system, as has been
done every off-season to once again make the BCS fail-proof.  Or
create a playoff as happens in division two and division three
college football.

Option 1:

While Navy put together a good season and Army is benefiting
from former NFL coach Bobby Ross, neither team is an NCAA
powerhouse.  Yet every year the Army – Navy game is one of the
most watched games in College football.  It is a tradition and a
rivalry that has lasted for decades.  And now imagine the uproar if
next year Army played Texas in the Army – Navy Game.

For over 100 years the Rose Bowl has been the granddaddy of
them all.  The Pac-10 against the Big-10.  Yet since the invention
of the BCS in 1998, the Pac-10 and Big-10 have faced one another
five times, yet only once in the past four years.  Next year will
likely be no different as the BCS National Championship game will
be at the Rose Bowl.

The tradition that made the Rose Bowl the granddaddy is being
diminished to a point of almost non-existence.  Rumors are already
swirling about Texas being unable to fill the stands of the Rose
Bowl.  This is not a cheap shot at Texas who deserves all the
accolades associated with their terrific one-loss season.  But
rather a call to return to Rose Bowl roots.

In the three options that College Football faces with the BCS,
returning to historic roots should be heavily considered.  College
football is supposed to be about student-athletes performing both
on and off the field.  The advent of the BCS has placed greater
emphasis on winning and less on education.

Option 2:

The second and most likely option is another tweak of the BCS
system.  A tweak that assures the top teams access to the BCS
money.  This year, consensus number four California and
undefeated Boise State were both kept out of the BCS.  While two-
loss Michigan and three-loss Pittsburgh will cash in on BCS bowl
games.

The BCS could change the system guaranteeing BCS bowl slots to
conference champions only if they finished within the top ten of
the final BCS poll.  A feat Boise State accomplished and Michigan
and Pittsburgh failed.

However, it is doubtful that any of the major conference would
agree to such a change because of the loss of income from BCS
bowls.  While the Big-10 and Big East would lose under this
change this season, it would affect any major conference that had
a poor season.

Option 3:

The final and most appropriate change would be a playoff.  Many
have called for the top-four teams to face off.  However, this
would cause problems this season, as undefeated Utah and Boise
State are not in the top four.  Furthermore, the distinction
between California and Texas is negligible as they are the number
four and five teams.

A better system would create a playoff for the top eight BCS
teams with a clause that would bump number eight out if a mid-
major is undefeated at the end of the college football season.
This year the top eight teams would be USC, Oklahoma, Auburn,
Texas, California, Utah, Georgia and Virginia Tech, respectively.
And because Boise State is undefeated and number nine in the
BCS, Boise State would replace Virginia Tech as the number eight
team.

A new system would give a home field advantage to the top four
by placing them in the BCS Bowl stadium closest to their home
field.  Therefore USC would play Boise State at the Rose Bowl,
Oklahoma v. Georgia at the Sugar Bowl, Auburn v. Utah at the
Orange Bowl, and Texas v. Cal at the Fiesta Bowl.  With the
winner and higher rated team keeping their home field.

If this new system were to play out as the BCS hopes, number
one USC would play against number 2 Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl
for the national championship.
