BCS Drops the Ball… Again
By:  Keith Dobkowski

You would think that one would no longer be surprised by the BCS
follies.  However, once again the Pac-10 has placed its faith in a
system that has failed the league.  For the fifth time in six years,
the Pac-10 will be on the outside looking in to the BCS Bowls.

Here’s the quick history lesson…

In 2000, both Oregon and Washington sported one-loss records.
Both were denied a chance to face the top team, Oklahoma, as
Florida State, ranked 3rd in the both human polls slid into the BCS
National Championship Game.  While Miami, then ranked second in
both human polls, missed out.  To further complicate the matter,
Miami beat FSU, Washington beat Miami and Oregon beat
Washington.

In 2001, Oregon was once again a one-loss team.  They were
ranked second in both polls yet were bypassed by the BCS in
favor of fourth ranked Nebraska.  Nebraska was smoked in the
BCS title game, while Oregon destroyed the third ranked Buffalos
of Colorado.

In 2003, three teams sported one-loss records.  Yet the BCS
strayed once again from the Pac-10 as USC was the odd team
out.  USC went on to win its bowl game and claimed a share of the
National Title.

In 2004, USC was in but Cal was left at the door as last minute
shuffling placed Texas ahead of Cal.  While neither Cal nor Texas
played before the final vote, there was a significant change in the
coaches poll that placed Texas in front of Cal.  Texas slid in as
number four in the BCS and the AP Poll slid out of the BCS system
after the controversy.

2005 has brought more of the same.  The Pac-10 is standing once
again on the outside looking in.  The 10-1 Oregon Ducks have
been booted by the BCS and will face unranked Oklahoma in the
Holiday Bowl.  The financial impact is a cool $12 million, as the
Holiday Bowl pays just $2 million.

Teams in the money and in front of Oregon in the BCS Bowls
include 8-4 FSU.  Not much more than four losses need’s to be
said.  FSU will face Penn State.

Penn State had a great year, yet played an easier schedule than
Oregon.  Penn State’s out of conference games were against
Central Michigan, South Florida and Cincinnati.  While Oregon
faced Bowl-Bound Houston, Conference Champion Montana and
Top 25 Fresno State.  A better match-up would have placed Penn
State against Oregon.  A battle of two 10-1 teams, a rematch of
the 1994 Rose Bowl, and a continuance of the Big-10 v. Pac-10
rivalry.  The BCS opted not to.

Also in front of Oregon were the pair of two-loss teams meeting in
the Fiesta Bowl.  Ohio State and Notre Dame both finished with 9-
2 records.  OSU played one of the hardest schedules in College
Football facing six Top 25 teams.  OSU’s two losses came against
#2 Texas and #3 Penn State.  Again, a Big-10 v. Pac-10 match-up
between Oregon and OSU would be better suited for the Fiesta
Bowl.

Notre Dame cannot make such a statement as they lost to
Michigan State, who finished with a losing record.  Notre Dame did
not play a single significant team after the USC game, and barely
squeaked past the Stanford Cardinal.  In fact, Notre Dame only
beat three teams that boasted winning records in 2005, one of
which was Navy, who barely plays a division one schedule.

The next step and reasonable step is for conferences to back out
of the BCS as the AP did last year.  The Pac-10 has had the best
team in college football in USC for the past three seasons, as well
as the Heisman winners, assuming Reggie Bush wins this year.
Using this as leverage, the Pac-10 could destroy the BCS by
withdrawing.  There is already enough outrage over the system
that the elimination of the one of the strongest conferences and
college football’s biggest powerhouse could tear down the very
faulty system.  The status quo just won’t do.
