The Patriots Are Victorious
By:  Keith Dobkowski, NFL News Writer
February 7, 2005

The NFL season has concluded and for the third time in four years
the New England Patriots are Super Bowl Champions.  While the
Pats continue to run over their Super Bowl counterparts by three
points, this year’s game was the ugliest by far.   Leading the ugly
charge was the game’s best player Donovan McNabb.

McNabb threw duck after duck.  It was as if nervousness caused
by the moment forced McNabb to overthrow the ball.  Time after
time McNabb’s balls missed the intended target or spiraled
downwards.  The wobble was seen throughout every replay.

The duck is the result of a quarterback moving his hand to quickly
through the throwing zone.  This causes the ball to wobble and
eventually dive.  With just seven and a half minutes remaining in
the game and the Philadelphia Eagles down 24-14, McNabb’s
pass intended for L.J. Smith was intercepted by Tedy Bruschi as
the ball ducked dived several yards short of the target.

McNabb still threw for three touchdowns and 357 yards, but those
numbers are inflated due to an early deficit.  The 14-7 hole forced
the Eagles into the air and limited the run to 17 attempts for 45
yards.

Several other spotlights from the game include Tom Brady’s
leadership, Bill Belichick’s legacy, Terrell Owens’ bravery, Andy
Reid’s clock management, and the Patriots dynasty.

Brady is now part of a very elite group of quarterbacks to have
won three Super Bowls.  Brady has joined the likes of Joe
Montana, Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw.  Many have
immediately compared Brady to his childhood hero Montana.
However this comparison is far from true.  Brady’s leadership is
unquestioned, but his numbers in the biggest game do not
remotely compare to Montana’s.  Brady’s average passer rating is
just under 99, while Montana’s is an incredible 122.5.  Brady
should be applauded for his accomplishments and not subjected
to unfair comparisons.  A very similar statement can be made of
the dynasty talk below.

Belichick also joined an elite club of coaches that have won at
least three championships.  Like Brady, Belichick is the fourth
member of the group composed of Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll and Joe
Gibbs.  Belichick’s three Super Bowls clearly puts him in Canton.
However it will be years before we can fully understand Belichick’s
effect on the game, a larger accomplishment than one’s effect on
a single team.  If Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis become
successful, Belichick’s legacy will grow.

Owens’ play on Sunday did more to alleviate his selfish demeanor
and crass attitude than any words could possibly do.  Owens was
spectacular as he caught nine balls for 122 yards.  Owens, who is
the leagues biggest self-promoter, clearly put the Eagles and the
Super Bowl above his own well being.  Just seven weeks removed
from a broken leg and torn ligaments, Owens suited up and
started.  Though Owens did not get the win, his effort will be
remembered with the likes of the flu ridden Michael Jordan and
Pete Sampras, the broken leg and amputated pinkie of Ronnie
Lott, and the historic four points scored by a gimpy Willis Reed.

The Ealges last two possessions were full of time clock
mismanagement.  Down ten points with less than six minutes
remaining the Eagles did not revert to a no-huddle offense.
Instead the Eagles took their time as they drove the length of the
field to score.  The Eagles were then forced to attempt an onsides
kick, which failed.

Subsequently when the Eagles got the ball back with less than a
minute remaining on their own 3-yard line, McNabb faltered by
throwing a short pass in the middle of the field.  Reid should have
been prepared for such a situation.  The Eagles should have
attempted two medium passes in the middle of the field before
shooting for the sideline.  Further, McNabb should have known to
throw the ball away once the pocket collapsed.  Instead McNabb
ate up valuable clock time scrabbling around the end zone.

Finally, the word that has surrounded this Super Bowl has been
dynasty.  With a win, would the Patriots be a dynasty?  Well, the
Patriots got the win but it is just too early to declare them
anything.  Yes they won three of the last four Super Bowls, but
they also missed the playoffs two years back.  Rather, it is time
for the Patriots to enjoy Super Bowl XXXIX and let the discussions
of dynasty take place once their run has been completed.

It has been a great football season and NFL at Legalball will see
